Our road trip consisted of two parts. First we would drive out to Pittsburgh, PA to see my sister Ashley and soon to be brother-in-law Bryan. Then we would continue on with our journey to our hotel in Kentucky. (right across the river from Cincinnati)
As we drove the first leg of our trip we were both enthusiastic about this special mommy-daughter time we were going to have. We sang along with each of the Disney Princess movies that played, pointed out the various sites and animals that we saw and had fun picking out our meals together at the rest stops.
We made excellent time and arrived in Pittsburgh at about 3:20 pm. Phoebe and I both welcomed the time out of the car and the chance to hang out with family. As much fun as we were having in the car, I think we both needed someone other than each other to talk to for a little while. We stayed for a few hours, got a tour of the city and the college my sister attended, and went out to dinner. At 7 pm, Phoebe and I dropped them off at home, and started the next leg of our journey.
The second part of our journey was not as fun filled and up beat as the first. We still had 4 1/2 hours to go to get to our hotel and we were both tired and sick of being in the car. We continued to watch/listen to the rest of our Disney Princess movie collection while trying to find anything we could to keep ourselves from going stir crazy looking at endless mountains and trees.
As the sun set and light turned to dark, the road stretched on like what seemed forever. Phoebe eventually fell asleep so I turned off the movies and started scanning through the radio stations looking for anything upbeat to keep me motivated.
As I drove with the radio on scan, all I could do was think about what these next few days would bring. I feel so blessed to have this appointment with a specialist who knows about Phoebe's disease, but at the same time I feel fear like I have never felt before. I feel like this is a double edged sword. For as much as I want this doctor to tell us everything we need to know, I'm terrified of what he could tell us. The closer I was getting to Cincinnati the more I started to wish it was just me and Phoebe on this trip.
Finally, at 11:40 pm we crossed over the river from Cincinnati into Kentucky and followed the GPS to our hotel. By the time the car was in park Phoebe's eyes popped open and she asked "Are we here?" I felt so relieved to tell her that we were! I gave her a few minutes to wake up, then we grabbed out suitcases and went to check in to what would be our "home" for at least the next 3 days.
Now all we can do is settle in for the night and wait for the morning phone call about what appointments we have tomorrow.
